Half a day, two rich legacies — mighty Roman ruins and the enduring spirit of Sagunto’s Jewish Quarter

Duration: 4-4.5 hours
Location: Sagunto (~ 30 minutes from Valencia)
Availability: The Roman castle is unfortunately closed on a Monday but we can still visit the outdoor medieval Jewish quarter and heritage sites.
Just a short 25-minute drive north of Valencia lies one of the most overlooked treasures of our region, Sagunto. If you’re fascinated by Roman history, medieval architecture, or the stories of the Jewish communities that shaped Spain, then this half-day tour is a perfect way to step outside the city and step back in time, without giving up your afternoon for beach, tapas, or a siesta.
We’ll pick you up from your hotel, cruise ship, or a location of your choosing, and head towards the hills where Sagunto overlooks the Mediterranean. As we arrive, you’ll immediately see why empires fought over this place; its location is spectacular. We begin in the historic old town, wandering through quiet, whitewashed streets and feeling the layers of history beneath our feet.
High above the town stretches Sagunto Castle, the largest Roman fortress still standing on the Iberian Peninsula. We’ll make our way up (slowly and comfortably, with plenty of stops for photos and stories) to explore its ancient walls, gates, and panoramic views that stretch across the sea and mountains. Parts of the fortress date back over 2,000 years, and you’ll hear how Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Christians all left their mark here.
Just below the castle lies one of Sagunto’s jewels, its Roman Theater, built into the hillside in the 1st century. Restored to its former glory, it still hosts performances today. Standing on its stone steps, you can almost hear the echoes of ancient voices.
But Sagunto is not only Roman. It is also home to the only intact Jewish quarter (Judería) in the Valencian region. We’ll wander through narrow lanes where a thriving Jewish community lived for centuries. You’ll see the site of the old mikveh (ritual bath), a rabbi’s cemetery, and the rare hypogea – burial crypts unique to this region and deeply moving to visit. These streets are quiet now, but the stories remain.
Other highlights may include the Temple of Diana, remains of the medieval city walls, and charming town squares where locals enjoy their morning coffee. If time allows, we’ll pause for a drink or snack while taking in the view.
With private transport, an expert local guide, and a flexible itinerary tailored to your pace, this Sagunto day trip from Valencia is the ideal way to explore one of the region’s most historic and culturally rich towns – all in just a few hours. And like so many of our guests, you may find yourself wondering how such an extraordinary place has stayed so wonderfully untouched by mass tourism.
