Valencia Community’s best-preserved city walls — a medieval escape through orange groves

Duration: 5 hours
Location: Alzira (~ 40 minutes from Valencia)
Escape Valencia on a half-day tour to Alzira, a historic town set among the orange groves of the Ribera Alta region. Known for its impressive well-preserved medieval walls, charming old center, and peaceful natural surroundings, Alzira is one of the most authentic Valencian towns to explore on a short excursion from the city.
After a scenic 40-minute drive from Valencia, we arrive at the historic heart of Alzira and begin a relaxed walking tour through its medieval quarter, where winding streets, small plazas, and centuries-old buildings reveal the town’s Islamic and Christian past. The highlight is Alzira’s remarkable medieval walls, some of the best-preserved fortifications in the province. Your guide brings these defensive structures to life as you walk along their surviving sections and towers, learning how Alzira once stood as a strategically important walled city on an island in the river.
We continue through the historic core to see architectural gems such as the old Town Hall façade, sections of the ancient city gates, and viewpoints overlooking what was once the city’s protective moat and river channels. When open, we visit the MUMA Municipal Museum, home to archaeological pieces that help visualize Alzira’s evolution from an Islamic medina to a Christian stronghold.
To complete the visit, we drive a short distance to the edge of the Murta Valley, where you enjoy a refreshing drink with views of the surrounding hills and countryside before returning to Valencia through farmlands and orange groves.
A perfect half-day Valencia to Alzira tour for travelers who love history, medieval architecture, and authentic Valencian culture – all close to the city yet wonderfully untouched by mass tourism.
