Leaving Valencia behind, we head northwest across rolling plains and quiet countryside before the mountains of Aragon rise on the horizon. After a scenic drive of just over two hours, we arrive in Teruel, a provincial capital rich in legend and artistry. The town is famous for its Mudejar architecture, a unique blend of Islamic and Gothic styles that earned UNESCO World Heritage status. As we explore the historic center, your guide reveals the romantic tale of the Lovers of Teruel, immortalized in the Mausoleum of the Lovers, a beautiful 13th-century monument that tells Spain’s own version of Romeo and Juliet. Teruel’s winding streets, elegant towers, and warm terracotta tones create an atmosphere both intimate and grand. You’ll have time to admire its cathedral, the San Pedro Church, and the beautifully tiled towers that rise like sentinels above the city.

The journey then continues through mountain scenery toward Albarracín, a storybook village that seems frozen in time. Perched dramatically on a rocky bend of the Guadalaviar River and surrounded by ancient walls, Albarracín is often hailed as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, and it’s easy to see why. Here, pastel-red houses cling to the hillside, wooden balconies lean over narrow cobbled lanes, and stone archways open to breath-taking views of the surrounding valleys. Your guide will lead you through this medieval labyrinth, sharing stories of its Moorish past, its centuries as a frontier fortress, and its modern-day role as a center for art restoration and preservation.

You’ll have time to explore the ruins of the Moorish castle, stroll along the ancient defensive walls, or simply wander at your own pace,  stopping to photograph hidden corners, browse small artisan shops, or enjoy lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the rooftops.

As the day draws to a close, the drive back to Valencia offers one last look at Aragon’s rugged beauty, a landscape that has inspired centuries of legend and romance.
