Escape the city and step into a world of mountain air, ancient trails, and hidden wonders on this full-day journey through the Sierra de Espadán and the Caves of San Josep. From the charming village of Aín to the underground river that flows beneath Vall d’Uixó, this tour offers the perfect mix of gentle hiking, history, and breathtaking scenery.

We’ll leave Valencia behind and head north into the heart of the Sierra de Espadán, a landscape of rugged peaks, terraced olive groves, and pine-covered slopes. The road winds through peaceful villages and the ruins of old hilltop castles that whisper of Moorish times and medieval frontiers. After just over an hour, we reach Aín, a tiny mountain village often called the “jewel of Espadán.”

From here, we begin an easy, 45-minute circular hike, ideal for nature lovers and families. The trail leads gently upward through olive terraces and aromatic pine forest until we reach the ruins of a 10th-century Moorish castle perched high above the town. From the top, the views stretch across the valley and surrounding mountains — a landscape once marked by the meeting of kingdoms, cultures, and faiths. Your guide shares stories of the region’s history and ecology as we enjoy the tranquility and fresh mountain air.

After the hike, there’s time to relax over a traditional lunch at a local restaurant, savoring regional flavors and seasonal dishes from the Sierra de Espadán.

In the afternoon, we continue to Vall d’Uixó, where the Caves of San Josep await — home to Europe’s longest navigable underground river. Step aboard a small boat and glide through the softly lit caverns, admiring dramatic rock formations and hearing tales of the prehistoric Iberians who once found shelter here. The experience is peaceful and mesmerizing — a perfect counterpoint to the open mountain landscapes of the morning.

As we journey back to Valencia, the light fades over the Mediterranean foothills, leaving lasting impressions of a day filled with nature, discovery, and the timeless beauty of inland Valencia.

• Cave entrances are subject to availability, and we highly recommend booking this tour in advance to avoid disappointment, especially during the high season. Please note that the caves may also close in the event of inclement weather.
• The caves maintain a comfortable temperature of 19–20ºC year-round, so a light jacket is recommended. Between each cave, our boat passes through narrow tunnels that require bending your neck. Guests with back issues or taller individuals may find this a bit uncomfortable.
• The price of lunch is not included in the tour cost (to allow for flexibility) and will need to be paid directly to the restaurant on the day. We would be delighted to help organize lunch for you at a local restaurant within your preferred budget.
