Escape Valencia for a full-day adventure exploring the Sierra de Espadán mountains, picturesque villages, and the historic town of Sagunto, all with a passionate local guide who truly knows and loves these places. This private tour from Valencia combines easy hiking, medieval ruins, and Roman history, perfect for families, nature lovers, and culture enthusiasts.
We’ll leave the city behind and head north into the stunning Sierra de Espadán mountain range, passing peaceful villages and crumbling hilltop castles that hint at centuries of stories. Once we arrive to the little village of Aín, we’ll begin our hike—an easy, 45-minute walk that meanders up through olive groves and pine forest until we reach the ruins of a Moorish castle, over 1,000 years old, perched above the town. From here, we’ll take in unforgettable views over the valley and mountains that once formed the frontier between kingdoms, cultures, and faiths.
Afterwards, we’ll make our way to Sagunto, just a short drive away but a true journey back in time. This town is layered with history like nowhere else in our region. First the Romans, who built the largest fortress still standing on the Iberian Peninsula and a theater carved right into the hillside. Then the Jewish community, who lived here for centuries and left behind the only intact Jewish quarter in the Valencian region. We’ll wander through its narrow whitewashed streets, visit the old mikveh (ritual bath), see the rabbi’s cemetery, and even step inside the rare hypogea—subterranean burial chambers that exist nowhere else around here. Standing in these quiet places, you can almost feel the lives of those who once called this home.
We’ll also visit the impressive Roman theater, the Via Pórtico Museum with its preserved Roman street, the Temple of Diana, and of course, climb up to Sagunto Castle for breathtaking views of the sea, mountains, and the town spread out below.
With private transport, a relaxed pace, and a knowledgeable guide who loves telling the stories behind the stones, this Valencia day trip is a perfect blend of fresh mountain air, ancient ruins, and deep cultural immersion.
