Nature and tranquility combine in Montanejos’ rivers, gorges, and mountain views

Duration: 8 hours
Location: Montanejos (~ 1.5 hours from Valencia)
Trade the coast for the mountains on this full-day Montanejos thermal springs tour from Valencia, one of the region’s most breathtaking natural treasures. This private day trip blends mountain scenery, crystal-clear rivers, and Moorish legends, ideal for those seeking authentic Valencian nature experiences to unwind, explore, and reconnect with the landscape.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive inland from Valencia, heading northwest through rolling farmland, forested hills, and winding mountain passes. After about an hour and a half, we arrive at the picturesque spa town of Montanejos, nestled deep in the Alto Mijares valley — a region of rugged cliffs, turquoise rivers, and ancient legends.
The thermal springs of Montanejos have drawn visitors since Moorish times, when King Zayd Abu Zayd declared them “the waters of eternal youth.” Today, these crystal-clear pools still flow at a steady 25°C, surrounded by dramatic limestone walls and lush Mediterranean vegetation. (Please note, we don’t call these ‘hot’ springs, because in the summer, 25ºC feels chilly! In the winter, it feels warm, but they are not ‘hot’.)
We begin with a gentle walk along the Mijares River, following a beautiful trail through canyons and pine forests. The landscape is a mosaic of emerald pools and sunlit cliffs, offering endless photo stops and moments of quiet connection with nature. Your guide shares stories of the region’s history, geology, and flora as we explore. There’s time to relax or swim in the thermal waters of the Fuente de los Baños, a natural paradise where warm spring water meets cool mountain air, an unforgettable experience that leaves you refreshed and renewed.
Afterwards, enjoy a leisurely lunch in Montanejos, tasting local mountain cuisine — from rustic stews and grilled meats to homemade desserts and regional wines. If you’d like, you can add the optional hike up to the ‘La Cova Negra’ (Black Cave), the largest cave in the Valencia region which offers stunning views of the region surrounding it. Before heading back, you may wish to wander the village, browse small artisan shops, or enjoy a coffee on a sunny terrace overlooking the valley.
As we return to Valencia in the late afternoon, the changing light over the mountains is the perfect finale to a day filled with nature, relaxation, and the serene beauty of inland Valencia.
