From castle walls to tomato battles – discover the picturesque town of Buñol in the western Valencian mountains

Duration: 5 hours
Location: Buñol (~ 40 minutes from Valencia)
Leave Valencia behind and journey west into the rolling foothills of the Sierra de Malacara on this private half-day tour to Buñol, a charming village best known for its annual La Tomatina festival—but with far more to offer than tomatoes. After a scenic 40-minute drive, we park in the upper part of town and begin a gentle stroll through Buñol’s historic center and its whitewashed lanes. Your guide leads you up to the medieval Castillo de Buñol, dramatically perched above the ravine. Enjoy time to wander its courtyards and viewpoints, learn about its Muslim and Christian heritage, and take in sweeping views over the canyon.
Next, depending on the day, we visit the Tomatina Interpretation Center, a fun and interactive stop that explains the origins, traditions, and colorful stories behind the world-famous tomato fight. If closed, we use this time to explore more of the old town’s hidden corners or enjoy a short break in a local café.
From here, we either take a short drive or begin a relaxed walk along the Río Juanes nature trail, a beautiful riverside path with wooden walkways, small cascades and shaded spots. This gentle nature route is flexible and designed to keep total walking time to no more than 1.5 hours, with options for shorter turn-around points depending on your pace.
After reconnecting at the vehicle, sit back and enjoy the drive back to Valencia through rural landscapes, farms, and pine-covered hills, arriving refreshed and full of new stories about one of Valencia’s most authentic inland towns.
