Discover the history, eras, and symbolism of Spanish azulejos. A hands-on workshop in Benimaclet.

Duration: 1.5 hours
Location: Spain Memories – Benimaclet, Valencia
Step into the heart of Valencia’s artistic heritage with this immersive tile painting workshop in the culturally rich neighborhood of Benimaclet. In our peaceful indoor garden space inspired by a traditional huerto valenciano, you’ll learn the history of Spanish and Valencian azulejos, from medieval designs and Renaissance patterns to modernist symbolism and contemporary motifs.
Guided by a local Valencian artist, you’ll explore the different eras of tile-making, discover why certain colors and symbols were used across centuries, and understand how tiles told stories about religion, family identity, trade, agriculture, and daily life. This workshop blends art, history, and hands-on creativity, making it one of the most authentic cultural activities in Valencia.
You’ll then choose your favorite historical style or craft your own design to create a beautiful, hand-painted ceramic tile. Whether it’s a medieval floral pattern, a traditional blue-and-white Valencian motif, or a modern geometric design, your tile becomes a personal interpretation of centuries of Spanish artistry.
Soft Spanish guitar music sets the atmosphere as you paint in our serene huerto-inspired space. By the end of the workshop, you’ll take home a beautifully crafter, one-of-a-kind ceramic tile, a meaningful Valencian souvenir and a lasting memory of Spain’s rich artistic tradition.
You will be using acrylic paints so you may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy!
