Mountains, caves, and ancient ruins – explore Aín’s wild landscapes and customize your afternoon with either Sagunto’s timeless history or the subterranean wonder of the Caves of San Josep.

Escape Valencia for a full-day private adventure into the mountains, villages, and ancient landscapes of inland Valencia, guided by a passionate local who truly knows and loves these places. This experience combines gentle hiking, breath-taking scenery, and deep history, with two unforgettable afternoon options: the monumental ruins of Sagunto or the magical underground river of the Caves of San Josep.
Leaving the city behind, we head north into the heart of the Sierra de Espadán, a protected mountain range of pine forests, rugged peaks, terraced olive groves, and quiet villages. Along the way, we pass crumbling hilltop castles that hint at centuries of frontier life between Moorish and Christian kingdoms.
Our morning begins in the tiny mountain village of Aín, often called the jewel of Espadán. From here, we set off on an easy, scenic hike of about 45 minutes, suitable for families and casual walkers. The trail winds gently uphill through olive groves and aromatic pine forest until we reach the ruins of a 10th-century Moorish castle perched above the village. From the top, sweeping views open across the valley and surrounding mountains, landscapes once shaped by shifting borders, cultures, and faiths. Your guide brings these stories to life while we soak in the tranquility and fresh mountain air.
After the hike, there’s time to relax and enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant, featuring seasonal dishes and regional flavors from the Sierra de Espadán.
In the afternoon, the journey continues with one of two equally compelling experiences:
Option 1: Sagunto – Layers of Ancient History
Travel to the historic town of Sagunto, one of the most important archaeological sites in eastern Spain. Here, history unfolds layer by layer—from Roman grandeur to medieval Jewish life. We explore the vast Sagunto Castle, the largest Roman fortress still standing on the Iberian Peninsula, with panoramic views of the sea, mountains, and town below. Visit the Roman theater carved into the hillside, the Via Pórtico Museum with its preserved Roman street, the Temple of Diana, and the only intact Jewish quarter in the Valencian region, including the mikveh, cemetery, and rare hypogea—subterranean burial chambers unique to this area.
Option 2: The Caves of San Josep – An Underground World
Head to Vall d’Uixó to experience the Caves of San Josep, home to Europe’s longest navigable underground river. Glide silently by boat through softly lit caverns, surrounded by dramatic rock formations shaped over thousands of years. Along the way, hear stories of prehistoric Iberian peoples who once sheltered here, making this a peaceful and mesmerizing contrast to the open mountain landscapes of the morning.
As we return to Valencia, the day closes with lasting impressions of mountain air, ancient trails, and the timeless beauty of inland Spain. With private transport, a relaxed pace, and a guide who truly loves sharing the stories behind the stones, this full-day escape offers a perfect balance of nature, culture, and discovery.

For larger groups, we arrange high-quality pre-booked minibuses or spacious taxi-vans with professional drivers. While we cannot guarantee a specific brand or model, you can always expect vehicles that are tidy, reliable, and suited to your group size for a smooth, enjoyable journey.
IMPORTANT NOTE (for groups of 6): In my larger touring car, the middle two seats are spacious and comfortable, and the back seat is a three-person bench seat that might be a tight squeeze for some. Before I can confirm a booking for six people with this vehicle, I will need confirmation that you understand this arrangement before I accept the booking. If you prefer, I would be happy to arrange a private coach and driver in addition to your guide. Please let me know that this is your preference when you submit your pre-booking form.
